Welcome to our virtual study trip to a sustainable city!
The Sustainable City programme, together with Demos Helsinki, will organise a study trip of three events on best practices for sustainable urban development. Led by interesting speakers and examples from international contexts, the events will focus on challenges faced by different kinds of urban spaces and areas. The events will be held in English.
More detailed programmes of the events will become available a little later on this page, but we invite you to save the dates given below. When registering for the event, you will receive a calendar invitation and a Teams link to the email address you have provided.
The City: What to do with cars?
The first event ‘The City: What to do with cars?’ will be held on 13 January at 13–15. The event will look into the challenges of densely built urban spaces and how the spaces can be divided between the different modes of transport while also taking into account the need to reduce emissions and changes in people’s behaviour. The Neighbourhoods: How to strengthen social sustainability?
The second event ‘The Neighbourhoods: How to strengthen social sustainability?’ will take place on 26 January at 13-15. Even if there may be enough space and green areas, the city is not always equal, tolerant, responsive or resilient in the face of new challenges. This event will discuss ways to promote social sustainability in different kinds of residential areas. Please register by 25 January at 12.

The Small Town: How to respond to the rapid energy transition?
The third event ‘The Small Town: How to respond to the rapid energy transition?’ will be held on 9 February at 14–16. This closing even will focus on the highly topical and global question of energy. Smaller cities may be more agile and better capable of experimenting with different energy options, thus serving as excellent models for boosting the carbon-neutral energy transition and energy self-sufficiency. Please register by 8 February at 12.00.
