Participation of immigrants in developing their own environment

Uutta Itä-Helsinkiä -tapahtuman mainos

Immigrants do not often participate in the development of the urban environment and their voices are not heard. We discussed the challenges of participation with five organisations and sought solutions. The challenges include the lack of a culture of participation, language proficiency and access to information on opportunities for participation.

Results

  • A model for taking into account those city residents who are immigrants and speak other languages at interaction events. Plain language was identified as more important than different language versions.
  • Animated and plain language video titled Take part in Helsinki’s planning.
  • Good cooperation with organisations for immigrants.
  • A 3-night-long A New Eastern Helsinki online event.

Effects

  • The model and its checklists can be replicated more extensively, not only in work with immigrants.
  • The video encourages participation in events and forms of online participation. The video can be shared in social media regardless of the event.
  • Introduction of plain language education and implementation in the sector
  • Further projects include the development of Malmi centre and the implementation of the initial land planning phase for the Puhos mall
