Working together to achieve more sustainable cities
The Sustainable City programme promotes the sustainable development of cities and municipalities at the level of both practical urban development and strategic management. The main themes of the programme promote low-carbon, smart, healthy and socially sustainable cities. New solutions are sought to challenges that connect these themes and fall between them.
The key focus of the partnership-based approach is to supports cities’ own work towards sustainable urban development. The programme is also an integral tool for strategic urban development cooperation and for the government’s core urban policy.
The aim is to solve the cities’ mutual sustainability challenges, strengthen sustainability management, develop new solutions in practical experiments and promote the scaling, i.e. broader implementation, of good practices. At the same time, through these encounters and co-creation processes among stakeholders, new practices can be created for the interaction between cities and partnership between the state and urban areas.
We offer cities and municipalities extensive information and tools that catalyse sustainability change, expert and peer coaching, opportunities for exchanging experiences and joint projects, and financial support and visibility. The aim is that, in future, urban development will be more environmentally, economically and socially sustainable, more comprehensively compatible with these different dimensions of sustainability, and more strongly based on partnerships between the State and cities.
The five-year programme is being implemented in 2019–2023. The programme is coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment, with cities, municipalities, several other ministries and operators working towards sustainable urban development as cooperation partners. The activities are closely linked to two global UN initiatives: the New Urban Agenda and the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
