Kerava urban bikes

Kerava tried out an ecological urban bike system. Abandoned bicycles were refurbished into city bikes for the use of residents. The aim was to create and achieve a sense of community among municipal residents and to reduce the number of bicycles borrowed illegally.

Results

  • During the experiment, it was noted that in order for city residents to find the bikes, they must have their own visible parking space, some other way of distinguishing them from other bikes or an application indicating their locations.
  • Without a lock and fees, the bikes tended to "disappear" for someone's personal use. In summer 2020, locks and a small fee were introduced.

Effects

  • The experiment showed that there is demand for city bikes, which justifies the acquisition of a fixed urban bike system.
  • It was found that abandoned bikes could be used to produce an affordable urban bike system.
  • Jalotus ry will continue its activities in Kerava from summer 2020 onwards
